We are all doing what we do and getting what we get. If you think about it, our existing systems are designed to give us the results we are getting. Our results attest to our success or failure in the "business side" of our practice. Belief and excuses don't matter: only results count. So each of our practices is headed in a certain direction: schedules, systems, staffing, fees, profitability and production yielding us a result - or better said - profit or a lack of one.
If you want a different result, you will need to focus your attention and energy in a different direction. Working harder or longer will not help. If you want a different result then you have to go to "different" to get there. I recognize this is difficult for many teams...we are wedded to ideas and philosophies that have been built in the 1950's and we are reluctant to to do it "different" because "this is how we've always done it" kind-of-thinking.
What worries me is that many doctors and team members are a lot like Alice in Alice in Wonderland.
Remember the part where Alic is running through the woods trying to escape and there are paths and roads everywhere. She comes upon the Cheshire Care floating on the air and asks:
"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
The Cheshire Cat answers:
"That depends upon where you want to get to."
Alice responds:
"I don't care much where."
To this problem the Cheshire says:
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go."
This is the problem in many practices today. Where do you want to go? Even better, "Where do you want to end up?" Your choices today will make that destination either occur or move you further out of reach.
This is a huge question as we end yet another year. Where do you want to end up in 2012?
Perhaps, for the first time, answering this question will force you to become intentional about everything you do in your practice. You and your team control your destiny and I know, for some, that thought can be a little scary. There are too many excuses out there, too much finger pointing and blame going on. It is time to get serious about your future and the future of your patients, team, and practice. It is time to "Man-Up" (or "Woman-Up" as the case may be).
Hopefully you've laid-out your goals for 2012... now work with your team on HOW TO MAKE THOSE GOALS HAPPEN. Everyone is depending on you!Continued Success to you and your Team!
Sincerely,
Art Deden
