The success of any communication is the behavior it inspires. Let me explain: communication is always aimed at motivating a certain action or a set of actions. You may be trying to influence a patient to accept recommended treatment or motivate a teammate to show-up on time each day. Regardless, you'll only know that you've gotten through by watching that person's actions afterward.
Thing is, we are always communicating. Words, gestures, tone of voice, and body language are the tools we use to communicate our messages. So too does a teammates clothing, behaviors, and actions. Consider the powerful messages conveyed by the appearance of your reception area and treatment rooms. Ever visit a practice with a dead plant in the corner? What message does that send...you can't even take care of a plant and you want to work on my teeth?
Every practice has two levels of communication: external and internal. External are the messages conveyed to patients such as brochures, marketing pieces, recare cards, billing statements, etc. Internal communications refers to all the communication that goes on inside the practice between team members.
If you have difficulty communicating the goals, needs, and expectations of your practice to yourself, it is a sure bet that your are highly ineffective communicating those same things to your team. This is why I tell practices I work with, "The Dentist Sets the Tone of the Practice."
Continued Success to you and your Team!
Sincerely,
Art Deden
