Connecting is the Key...

I am convinced more than ever that good communication and leadership are all about connecting. If you can connect with others your relationships are stronger, your ability to inspire teamwork increases, your influence is magnified, and your productivity skyrockets.

What do I mean when I say "connect?" Connecting is the ability to identify with people and relate to them in a way that increases your influence with them. Why is this important? Because the ability to communicate and connect with others is a major determining factor in reaching your potential. To be successful, you must work with and through others. And to do that at your absolute best, you must learn to connect.

Rate yourself - on a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest - where do you fall in terms of "connecting" with others? Now, ask your team to rate you on the same scale. Be sure to ask them to really think hard before answering and have them NOT place their name on the paper. This way they will feel more comfortable that you will not hold their rating of you against them.

If there is a large gap between where you rated yourself and where your team rated you...you need to wonder what is missing. If you rated yourself a 6 and the team rated you as a 6 as well, what will you need to do differently to rate a 10?

Too many dentists are out there trying to correct others when they should be out connecting with others!
